With Ferran Torres’ extra-time strike separating the two sides, Messi was left staring into the distance before being overcome by emotion as Spain celebrated a second World Cup crown.

It was a night in which Argentina never truly looked like themselves.
Spain’s relentless press and historically dominant defence suffocated the reigning champions, restricting the tournament’s highest-scoring attack to virtually nothing. The Albiceleste failed to register a shot on target for almost the entire contest, only threatening in the dying moments of extra time when Messi’s sublime pass found Marcos Senesi, whose close-range effort was heroically blocked.
For long spells, Messi himself was anonymous because Spain simply refused to let him breathe.
As the final whistle sounded, the 39-year-old could no longer hold back the emotion.
