Yasmin Karachiwala had shared a glimpse of Helen’s workout routine on Instagram, and it is as simple as it is effective. Focused on strength, mobility, and everyday functionality, her routine is designed to keep the body active without overexertion.
Here’s a look at Helen’s 5-step fitness routine that helps her stay strong and energetic even in her 80s:
1. Stand to Sit
This exercise focuses on something we do every day—sitting down and getting up. Helen practices moving from a standing position to sitting and back up again. It helps build lower body strength and improves balance, making daily movements easier and safer.
2. Bridging
For core strength, Helen includes a simple bridge exercise. Lying on her back with knees bent, she gently lifts her hips upward and lowers them back down in a controlled motion. The key is to avoid lifting too high and to move slowly, which helps strengthen the core without straining the neck.
3. Marching
To keep her legs strong, Helen performs a lying-down marching movement. With knees bent, she lifts one leg at a time, bringing it up until the knee is above the hip, and then lowers it back down. Alternating between both legs helps improve coordination and strengthen the lower body.
4. Wall Push-Ups
For upper body strength, Helen opts for wall push-ups—a beginner-friendly yet effective exercise. Standing a short distance from a wall, she places her hands slightly below shoulder height and bends her elbows to bring her body closer to the wall, then pushes back. This helps build arm and chest strength without putting too much pressure on the joints.
5. Theraband Front Raise With Openings
Using a resistance band, Helen works on her shoulder strength. She lifts the band upward and gently opens her arms while raising it, keeping the movement controlled and within a comfortable range. This helps improve shoulder mobility and strength without causing strain.
