US President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict following a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The call also covered wider geopolitical
issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking after the discussion, Trump indicated that Moscow may be open to pausing hostilities. He suggested that a shift in Russia’s position could lead to a potential agreement, depending on conditions being met.
Trump said Putin had shown some willingness towards de-escalation, noting that the Russian leader “suggested a little bit of a ceasefire” and may soon make an official announcement. He also remarked that Putin had earlier been open to a deal but faced obstacles that complicated progress.
“I spoke to Vladimir Putin today… I talked about Ukraine, and I talked a little bit about, uh, Iran. I talked about a few different subjects, mostly about Ukraine, and we had a very good conversation. And I think we’re going to come up with a solution relatively quickly, I hope… I think he’d like to see a solution, I can tell you, and that’s good,” Trump said.
“… He told me he’d like to be involved with the (nuclear) enrichment (in Iran), if he can help us get it. I said I’d much rather have you be involved with ending the war in Ukraine…He doesn’t want to see them have a nuclear weapon, either… He suggested a little bit of a ceasefire (in Ukraine), and I think he might do that. He might announce something having to do with it…”

‘I Want To End Your War’: Trump Tells Putin
The conversation also touched on tensions in the Middle East, particularlyIran’s nuclear activities. According to Trump, Putin even expressed interest in assisting Washington on the issue of uranium enrichment.
However, Trump made it clear that his priority remains the war in Ukraine. When Putin reportedly offered cooperation on other matters, Trump responded firmly: “Before you help me, I want to end your war.”
“We talked more about the war in Ukraine, but he would like to be of help (in ending the Gulf War). I said, before you help me, I want to end your war… I think he was ready to make a deal a while ago. I think some people made it difficult for him to make a deal…,” said Trump.
Trump also commented on Iran, saying, “He told me he’d like to be involved with the (nuclear) enrichment (in Iran), if he can help us get it. I said I’d much rather have you be involved with ending the war in Ukraine. To me, that would be more important because we’ve got to have that.”
He further said Russia also does not support a nuclear-armed Iran, adding, “He doesn’t want to see them have a nuclear weapon, either.”
Ukraine Ceasefire Likely On Victory Day
According to Russian state news agency TASS, the 90-minute call was described by Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov as “frank and businesslike.”
The leaders reportedly discussed a possible ceasefire during Victory Day, the Ukraine peace process, and broader tensions involving Iran and the Persian Gulf.
