The Indian national cricket team is set to undergo the Bronco Test as part of their fitness regimen going forward, following the suggestion by the side’s new fitness and conditioning coach, Adrian le Roux.
Reports further state that Le Roux also prefers the pacers to run more miles rather than gym-focused work, and head coach Gautam Gambhir is of the same opinion. The Indian team already implements the Yo-Yo Test and a 2-Km time trial for the players to check off their list to maintain their levels of fitness.
What is the Bronco Test?
The Bronco Test is a series of shuttle run exercises in which a player is required to cover distances of 20m, 40m and 60m respectively, with one cycle representing a set.
Player Requirement
Players will be required to complete five sets, approximately 1200m in six minutes, without taking a break.
The test has been introduced in an effort to lay down a marker in terms of fitness and conditioning the players are required to meet going forward.
As per a report in The Indian Express, a number of players contracted to the BCCI have made the trip to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to undergo the Bronco Test, with the side focusing on the running mileage of the players, pacers in particular, over gym-work.
Yo-Yo Test And Time Trial
The existing Yo-Yo Test requires players to cover the distance between two cones placed 20m apart, at incremental speeds, with a break of 10 seconds between every 40m. The Men In Blue set the minimum requirement score in the test to 17.1.
The 2-km time trial requires the seamers to clock a time of 8 minutes and 15 seconds, while wicketkeepers and batter have the luxury of an extra 15 seconds, at 8 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the stipulated distance.
Le Roux, who joined the side in his current capacity in June for his second stint with the Men In Blue, had and earlier spell with the Indian team between 2002 and 2003, before he went on to serve as the fitness and conditioning coach of South Africa, IPL sides Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings.
