Has Mohammed Shami played the last Test of his career?
The question will surely dominate the social sphere and elsewhere after the veteran pacer was again not considered in India’s squad for the upcoming
two-match Test series against West Indies next month.
Ever since making his international return earlier this year, Shami has played in 7 ODIs and two T20Is. He was part of India’s victorious campaign at the Champions Trophy during which he also picked up a five-wicket haul.
However, he wasn’t picked for the Test tours of Australia (2024-25) and England earlier this year with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar explaining how the 35-year-old is yet to build the fitness to go through the rigours of Test cricket.
On Thursday when Agarkar was asked if there’s any update on the veteran fast bowler, he quipped, “I have no update as of now” before adding that the bowler hasn’t played much red-ball cricket in the past two years as the prime reason why he hasn’t been picked.
“He (Shami) played a match in Duleep Trophy, but he’s not had a lot of cricket for the past 2-3 years. I think he played for Bengal and then in Duleep Trophy. As a performer we know what he can do but he will need to play some cricket,” he added.
