On Monday, England batter Jos Buttler penned an emotional tribute to his late father, who passed away a week earlier. Buttler shared a cherished photograph on Instagram of himself with his father holding
the ICC World Cup trophy, a reminder of England’s historic 2019 triumph.
The caption read: “Rest in peace Dad, thank you for everything.”

What Did Jos Buttler Do?
Despite the personal tragedy, Buttler chose to play for the Manchester Originals on August 9 against the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. It was a difficult outing on one of the most emotional nights of his life. Wearing black armbands in tribute, the Phil Salt-led Originals saw their captain fall for a four-ball duck. Attempting an expansive drive, Buttler edged the ball straight to Donovan Ferreira, leaving his side in early trouble.
The setback deepened when the Originals lost another wicket within four deliveries, both batters dismissed without scoring. Salt’s fighting 41 off 32 balls provided some resistance, but Manchester could only post 129 — a total that proved far too modest. Oval Invincibles’ openers, Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye, both struck rapid fifties and combined for an unbroken 114-run stand, sealing victory in just 57 balls.
The loss compounded a slow start to Buttler’s campaign. In Manchester’s first match of The Hundred 2025, he managed only 22 from 18 deliveries in a defeat to Southern Braves. The Originals now sit at the bottom of the table, winless after two matches, while the Invincibles have opened their season with back-to-back victories.
Buttler’s early struggles come despite strong recent form in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) , where he was one of Gujarat Titans’ standout performers, scoring 538 runs at a strike rate of 163.03, including five half-centuries. Manchester will next face London Spirit on August 11 at Old Trafford, as Buttler looks to find form amid a deeply personal period of grief.
