The announcement of Drishyam 3 has generated massive anticipation, with the makers confirming an October 2, 2026 theatrical release. However, the excitement was quickly accompanied by surprise when fans
noticed a significant omission in the official press note. While Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran and Rajat Kapoor were listed as part of the principal cast, Akshaye Khanna’s name was conspicuously absent.
The omission did not go unnoticed, especially considering the actor’s chilling turn as the antagonist in Drishyam 2 (2022)—a performance that was widely credited with elevating the sequel’s intensity and narrative stakes.
Reports Suggest Creative And Financial Differences
Soon after the announcement, speculation began swirling around Akshaye Khanna’s exit from the franchise. According to reports, the actor was initially expected to reprise his role in the third installment, particularly after his recent career resurgence with Dhurandhar and Chhaava.
A report by Bollywood Hungama suggested that remuneration became the major point of contention between the actor and the makers. A source close to the development revealed that Akshaye’s recent success prompted him to reassess his market value.
“Akshaye was menacing as the villain in Chhaava and completely stole the show in Dhurandhar. He has clearly emerged as one of the most in-demand actors at the moment. Realising this, he revised his fees and asked for Rs 21 crore for Drishyam 3,” the source stated.
Fee Demand Allegedly Exceeded Budget Plans
The reported fee hike reportedly caught the production team off guard. The source added that the makers attempted to reason with Akshaye, explaining that such a steep remuneration would significantly stretch the film’s planned budget.
However, Akshaye was said to have stood firm on his revised terms, believing that his presence in the film would substantially enhance its commercial appeal and audience interest—especially after the strong recall value his character carried from the previous installment.
Appearance Disagreement Adds To The Rift
Apart from financial discussions, reports also point to creative differences contributing to the fallout. Another source claimed that Akshaye suggested a change in his on-screen appearance for Drishyam 3, including the possibility of wearing a wig.
The makers, however, were reportedly against the idea, as the actor had appeared without a wig in Drishyam 2. Maintaining visual continuity was a priority for the team, and they were unwilling to alter the established look of the character.
A Mutual And Amicable Exit
With neither side ready to compromise on the key issues, Akshaye Khanna ultimately chose to step away from the project. Sources insist that the separation was mutual and amicable, with no hard feelings involved.
“Since his demands were not met, he decided to walk out of Drishyam 3. He wished the makers well, and the separation happened on a positive note. The team hopes to collaborate with him again in the future when both parties are aligned,” the source added.
As Drishyam 3 moves ahead without its former antagonist, it remains to be seen how the makers will reshape the narrative—and whether the franchise can recreate the same tension without one of its most formidable foes.
