Product labelling plays a crucial role in helping customers make informed choices especially when it comes to packaged food items. However, a viral video circulating on social media has raised serious
questions about the accuracy of food labels in India.
The video shows an Indian man examining a packet of dried kiwi fruit of brand “Radhe Mart” he had purchased from a local store. While checking the label, he was stunned to find that the product description defined “kiwi” not as a fruit, but as a “flightless bird”.
In the video, the front of the packet looks completely normal. It lists nutrition information like fibre, carbohydrates, protein and calories per 100 grams, just like any other dried fruit product.
But the surprise comes when the customer turns the box around. On the back, instead of describing the kiwi fruit, the label explains what a kiwi bird is. The product description reads, “About Dried Kiwi: Flightless, nocturnal bird endemic to New Zealand.”
Social media reactions
The video quickly went viral, with many wondering how such a basic error made it past quality checks and onto a packaged food label.
One person commented, “No authority checks nothing these days! No wonder we’re doomed.”
Another wrote, “When you ask the printing vendor to design the labels as well.”
“When a marketing guy takes help from chat gpt,” wrote the next.
“I have loved the aggressive effort of yours to challenge the labels and companies. But i have always wondered what if the companies start writing wrong stuff on the labels. False information !! What are we gonna do?” commented another.
Blue Bell ice cream mislabelled
This is not the first time such an incident has happened. Earlier, a Blue Bell ice cream product was recalled in Indiana after it was discovered that the wrong label had been placed on some containers. While the outside packaging showed one flavour, the ice cream inside was actually a different flavour.
The ice cream inside was Moo-llennium Crunch flavor, but the carton said Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. This was a problem because Moo-llennium Crunch contains nuts like almonds, walnuts and pecans, which are not listed on the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough label. People with nut allergies could have been at risk.
