Trying to understand the Indian Railways ticketing system is a daunting experience for even the most seasoned travellers. With the implementation of stricter boarding regulations as of May 2025, understanding
the alphanumeric codes on your Passenger Name Record (PNR) is no longer just a convenience but a necessity.
Hence, we break down the essential status codes of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and what they mean for your upcoming journey.
CNF (Confirmed)
- A CNF status indicates that a berth or seat has been successfully allocated to the passenger.
- Entitlement: The passenger is entitled to a full berth (or seat in Chair Car classes).
- Coach/Seat Number: For most classes, the specific coach and berth numbers are provided at the time of booking. However, for First Class AC (1A), these are typically assigned only after the final chart preparation.
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation)
The RAC status is a unique “half-way” confirmation. It guarantees that the passenger is permitted to board the train but does not initially provide a full sleeping berth.
Entitlement: Two passengers with RAC status share a single Side Lower berth. If a passenger with a confirmed ticket fails to show up or cancels their booking, the TTE (Traveling Ticket Examiner) will upgrade the RAC passenger to a full berth in order of seniority. And unlike waitlisted passengers, those with RAC tickets are legally allowed to board reserved coaches.
WL (Waiting List)
The WL status indicates that the current bookings have exceeded the capacity of the train. Within this category, there are several sub-types that determine the probability of confirmation:
- GNWL (General Waiting List): Usually carries the highest probability of confirmation as it draws from the largest pool of cancellations.
- PQWL (Pooled Quota Waiting List): Shared by several small intermediate stations; these typically have lower confirmation chances.
- RLWL (Remote Location Waiting List): Issued for intermediate stations where there is a separate fixed quota of seats.
New IRCTC Boarding Rules
As of May 1, 2025, Indian Railways has enforced stricter penalties regarding waitlisted tickets:
- No Entry in Reserved Coaches: Passengers holding a “Fully Waitlisted” ticket (where all passengers on a single PNR are still WL after chart preparation) are strictly prohibited from entering Sleeper or AC coaches.
- Penalties: Violation of this rule can result in fines of up to ₹250 in Sleeper Class and ₹440 in AC classes, in addition to being disembarked at the next station.
- E-Ticket Cancellations: If an e-ticket remains on the waiting list after the final chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled, and a refund is processed to the original payment method.
