Farah Khan may be one of Bollywood’s most successful choreographers and filmmakers, but her unexpected rise as a YouTuber continues to be one of the industry’s most delightful social-media success stories.
In just a year and a half, her food-and-fun vlogs — featuring her longtime cook Dilip — have amassed nearly 2.5 million subscribers, turning their casual kitchen banter into viral entertainment.
In a recent conversation with Soha Ali Khan on her YouTube channel, Farah opened up about how the series began, how Dilip accidentally became a breakout star, and how the digital journey has completely changed his life.
How Farah’s Casual Kitchen Videos Became a Viral Sensation
Farah shared that she initially turned to YouTube simply because she had time on her hands before starting her next film. Her food reels were already performing well on Instagram, so she decided to try long-form food content.
But after filming the first vlog, a realisation hit her — cooking on camera while delivering an engaging monologue was far more demanding than it looked. That’s when she thought of bringing in Dilip, her trusted cook.
“I used to just tell him, ‘Tu yeh bol de.’ I would give him the punchline and it just kind of exploded,” Farah recalled. The audience instantly connected with the duo’s natural chemistry and Dilip’s deadpan humour. “By the second vlog, we had our silver button.”
From Kitchen to YouTube Star: Dilip’s Life Transformed
Farah revealed that while Dilip had always been well-paid, his earnings and opportunities skyrocketed after he became part of the channel.
“I send his kids to English medium school now. I put his one son through a culinary diploma course,” she shared.
But success also brought to light some of Dilip’s struggles — particularly a large amount of debt he had accumulated over the years. Farah said it took an entire year to help him become financially stable.
“He had a lot of debt… One year has just gone in paying off that debt and telling him, ‘You can’t take loans on interest anymore because whatever I am giving you is going down a well.’ So I have cleared all his debts.”
Now, Dilip is building his own house. Farah added that she is even helping him get brand collaborations so that much of the construction “can be done for free.”
Creative Freedom on YouTube Beats TV and OTT, Says Farah
Farah also spoke passionately about the creative liberty YouTube offers — something she feels traditional media rarely allowed her.
“It’s my channel so I can do what I want,” she said. “There’s no OTT channel or production house saying we will have to cut this. And there is no TV channel saying you can only bring this guest on, which I used to hate.”
Without gatekeeping, restrictions, or forced celebrity line-ups, Farah has found the platform liberating — and lucrative.
The filmmaker laughed as she admitted, “I have complete independence… and I am making more money than most of my films.”
