In a world grappling with geopolitical tensions and rising conflicts, one small European island nation continues to stand out for all the right reasons. Iceland has once again secured the title of the world’s
most peaceful country, retaining the top spot in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) released by the Institute for Economics & Peace.
The Nordic nation has consistently led the rankings for nearly two decades, thanks to its exceptionally low crime rates, minimal militarisation, high levels of social trust, and political stability. Unlike many countries, Iceland has no standing army, and its strong social institutions continue to contribute to a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
Why Iceland Continues to Lead
The Global Peace Index evaluates 163 countries, measuring peacefulness across three key areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarisation. Iceland performed exceptionally well across all three categories, reinforcing its reputation as one of the safest places in the world.
Beyond the data, Iceland’s relatively small population, robust welfare system, low levels of violent crime, and emphasis on equality have helped create a society where trust and security remain deeply embedded in everyday life.
The World’s Top Five Most Peaceful Countries
According to the latest Global Peace Index, the five most peaceful countries are:
Iceland
Ireland
New Zealand
Austria
Switzerland
These countries consistently score highly due to stable governments, low crime, strong institutions, and limited involvement in armed conflicts.
Where Does India Rank?
India is ranked 127th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026, slipping from 115th place in 2025. The report assesses countries on three broad parameters—societal safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation. While India continues to face challenges related to internal security and regional geopolitical tensions, it remains ahead of neighbouring Pakistan in the latest rankings.
More Than Just Safety
For travellers, Iceland’s appeal extends far beyond its peace ranking. The country is celebrated for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, glaciers, waterfalls, geothermal lagoons, and the spectacular Northern Lights. Combined with its low crime rates and welcoming communities, it remains one of the world’s most desirable destinations for those seeking both adventure and tranquillity.
As global uncertainties continue to shape international headlines, Iceland’s continued presence at the top of the Global Peace Index serves as a reminder that stability, trust, and strong social systems remain the foundation of truly peaceful societies.
