People travelling on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road this weekend will need to prepare for delays and diversions. The Thane Traffic Police have announced a series of restrictions from December 12 to December 14
because major repair and resurfacing work is scheduled on key parts of the stretch.
The work is being carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). Since the repairs cover busy points like Gaimukh Nirakendra, Kajupada and the road near Fountain Hotel, the police have put a special traffic plan in place for heavy and light vehicles.
Heavy Vehicles Face Restrictions
Heavy vehicles coming from Mumbai and Thane towards Ghodbunder Road will not be allowed to move beyond the Y Junction and Kapurbawdi Junction.
Alternate routes:
They can go straight from Y Junction via Kharegaon Toll Plaza – Mankoli – Anjurphata – Nashik Road.
They may also turn right from Kapurbawdi Junction and move via Kasheli – Ajurphata.
Vehicles from Mumbra and Kalwa heading towards Ghodbunder Road will be stopped at Kharegaon Toll Plaza. They must then use the Kharegaon Khadi Bridge – Kharegaon Toll Plaza – Mankoli – Anjurphata route to reach their destination.
For vehicles coming from Nashik, entry will be blocked at Mankoli Naka. Drivers must take a right turn under the Mankoli Bridge and continue towards Ajurphata.
Light Vehicles Get Limited Access
Light vehicles from Thane towards Ghodbunder Road may proceed from Gaimukh Chowki using a temporary wrong-side diversion. They can then join the road near the cut close to the Fountain Hotel.
The advisory clearly states that emergency and essential service vehicles, such as ambulances, police vehicles, fire brigades, oxygen transporters and green corridor vehicles, will not be stopped.

Minister Pushes for Faster Completion
Reportedly, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik reviewed all ongoing work on Ghodbunder Road and instructed officials to finish the final-stage projects by December 15. These include development works and the foundation ceremony for a new theatre at Waghbil.
He said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has provided major funds for Thane’s development, leading to projects like rejuvenating 67 wells, upgrading crematoriums, building a dedicated pet crematorium, creating jogging tracks and developing the Balasaheb Thackeray Digital Aquarium.
Work on the service road along Ghodbunder Road is also in progress. Sarnaik reportedly asked all departments, including MMRDA, Metro, and the traffic police, to work together so that the service road can be completed by January 15.
