A man shared his experience from a trip to Bali, showing a side that many people don’t usually see online. While travel pictures often show clean villas and perfect views, he pointed out that reality can
look very different just outside those spaces.
He recorded a short clip to show the contrast between what is shown on social media and what actually exists nearby. His reaction in the video shows both surprise and confusion at what he saw.
Man Compares ‘Instagram vs Reality’
In the clip, the man starts by saying, “I’m gonna show you all Instagram. Show you all Instagram versus reality.” He then turns his camera to show the “Instagram” side.
The view includes a neat villa setup, with a bathtub filled with roses and a clean swimming pool below. Everything looks calm, clean, and exactly like the kind of pictures people post online. As he repeats “Instagram. Instagram,” the focus stays on this peaceful and well-kept space.
Reality Shows A Very Different Picture
He then switches the camera and says, “Reality.” The view suddenly changes. Right next to the villa, the surroundings look very different, showing a poorer area with basic homes and rough conditions.
Reacting to this, he says, “This is not the shit they show you on the website. Like, what is that? Who is that? Like, what? I want my money back. We are gonna make it work, though. We are gonna make it work.”
The video highlights how two very different worlds can exist side by side, something that many people may not expect before visiting.
This was my exact experience when I visited Bali. The locals are living in poverty as visitors sit in villas. I didn’t want my money back tho, I cried & then I took more money out & tipped more generously & told myself I’d never go back. Tourism is killing the island. https://t.co/pLYSag9wwW

As the clip spread, many users shared their own thoughts and stories. A user wrote, “This was my exact experience when I visited Bali. The locals are living in poverty as visitors sit in villas. Another said, “What you said is so real! I always find it funny when people “love to travel” and stay in resorts and contribute absolutely nothing to locals or take a second to think of anyone outside of themselves.”
A comment read, “This is the dark side of Tourism the internet never shows. Almost all popular tour attractions are like this. It’s the most heartbreaking thing you’ll ever witness, next to every gorgeous villa is a local school where kids go wearing flip flops and torn uniforms.”
Another user added, “Bali was a culture shock for me, I probably didn’t do enough research before I went there. What people don’t know is that the natives are actually a very small population most of the people there come from Java to work. You see how exploitative Western tourism really is.”
Some users had a different take. A comment said, “Without tourism they would be worse off. The best thing you could do is keep going there, support local businesses by spending your money there and tip well.”
