The city of Chennai is set to experience another surge of intense heat coupled with oppressive humidity, as temperatures are projected to rise further from today, according to the India Meteorological
Department (IMD).
Weather officials indicate that daytime highs across Chennai and adjoining areas could reach between 40°C and 41°C, while night-time temperatures are expected to remain unusually elevated, hovering around 29°C to 30°C.
Persistent Hot And Humid Conditions
According to a report in News 9, the prevailing weather pattern is expected to remain largely unchanged over the coming days. Conditions will continue to be characterised by high temperatures, heavy moisture in the air, and partly cloudy skies.
Although the region may witness occasional spells of light to moderate rainfall or isolated thunderstorms, particularly during the evening or late-night hours, these are likely to provide only short-lived relief. Such weather activity may also be accompanied by gusty winds, adding to the discomfort rather than significantly cooling conditions.
Extended Forecast Across Surrounding Districts
Similar weather trends are forecast to persist, with maximum temperatures likely to stay within the 39°C to 40°C range. Night-time conditions will offer little respite, with minimum temperatures expected to remain between 28°C and 30°C, contributing to restless and uncomfortable nights.
Parts of Chennai, along with neighbouring districts such as Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram, may receive scattered light to moderate rainfall in isolated pockets. However, these showers are not expected to substantially alter the overall hot and humid conditions dominating the region.
Rising ‘Feels-Like’ Temperatures And Health Risks
The combination of high heat and significant humidity levels is likely to push the ‘feels-like’ temperature well beyond actual readings. This can intensify the physical strain on the body, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Vulnerable groups, including outdoor labourers, elderly individuals, and children, are particularly at risk and are urged to exercise heightened caution.
Advisory Measures To Cope With Heat
Residents are strongly advised to maintain adequate hydration by consuming plenty of fluids throughout the day. Avoiding direct exposure to the sun, especially during peak afternoon hours between 11 am and 4 pm, is crucial. Wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing can help minimise heat absorption, while protective accessories such as umbrellas, caps, and sunglasses are recommended when stepping outdoors.
Individuals with pre-existing health conditions should remain especially vigilant and seek medical advice if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, or excessive sweating.
Outlook For The Coming Weeks
The weather office has indicated that temperatures are likely to remain above normal for this time of year, suggesting a prolonged spell of uncomfortable conditions.
While occasional pre-monsoon showers expected during May may offer intermittent relief, the broader outlook points towards a continued mix of dry heat and sporadic rainfall.
Warning From Regional Meteorological Centre
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has cautioned that the combination of elevated maximum temperatures and high humidity levels is likely to result in ‘discomfort weather’ across coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, at least until May 2, as reported by New Indian Express.
For Chennai specifically, forecasts over the next two days suggest temperatures in the range of 38°C to 39°C, with persistent hot and humid conditions.
Stay Updated And Alert
Authorities have urged residents to stay informed through official weather updates issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, as conditions may shift rapidly. Farmers and fishermen are also advised to closely monitor alerts, particularly those related to thunderstorms and changing wind patterns, to avoid potential risks.
Overall, while brief spells of rain may punctuate the coming days, Chennai is set to remain firmly under the grip of a prolonged and taxing hot and humid phase.
