Punjab Kings’ IPL 2026 playoff hopes hinge on a do-or-die clash against Lucknow Super Giants tonight. Last year’s runners-up set the early pace in the tournament, strengthening their case for a top-four
finish by going unbeaten in their first seven matches. However, they have since slumped to six consecutive defeats, and even a win tonight may not be enough for Shreyas Iyer’s side to progress.

Alongside their on-field decline, PBKS have also drawn attention for a social media statement urging people not to spread “fake news” – a previous post that mentioned “sports journalists” was later deleted.
Separately, social media activity by one of their key players has sparked divided opinions online and beyond. With pressure mounting from multiple fronts, questions have been raised over whether off-field controversies have affected their performances.
However, head coach Ricky Ponting has dismissed the idea that external noise has disrupted the team’s momentum, saying he is largely unaware of social media discussions.
“I don’t think anything externally has interrupted us as a team,” Ponting told reporters. “I’m not a big social media guy anyway, so I don’t, a lot of the stuff that’s been happening. I’m probably oblivious to (social media).”
“All I can do and control is, is the behaviour of the team and the way that the team prepares and the way that the team plays,” he added.
Positive Atmosphere
Heading into the crucial clash against LSG in Lucknow, Ponting said the mood in the camp remains upbeat. He stressed that the team has avoided panic and continues to stick to processes that have worked in the past.
“The atmospheres remain very positive and very relaxed,” Ponting said. “I think the worst thing you can do in a situation like this is panic and worry about what tomorrow brings. You’ve just got to stick to what you know has worked for you in the past as a player and certainly as a coach and a group of coaches, that’s exactly what we’ve done.”
“We’ve done our best to make sure that the environment’s stayed very positive and very relaxed and let the players just go about getting themselves prepared and ready for a game,” he added.
For PBKS to qualify, they must beat LSG and also hope that Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders lose their respective final league matches.
