Summer travel plans are already in motion; schools have closed, leave has been sanctioned, and train tickets were booked well in advance. But passengers heading out next week may need to rethink their
journeys, as Indian Railways prepares a move that could cause major disruptions.
This is not intended to alarm passengers. Even if your reservation is confirmed, it is strongly advised to check your train status before heading to the station in June. Arriving with luggage in hand only to discover that your train has been cancelled or rescheduled could cause unnecessary inconvenience.
Mega Block Planned in June
According to railway sources, a large-scale ‘mega block’ is being prepared for June. Under this plan, around 77 trains will be cancelled in total. Several superfast trains, including Duronto services, will have their routes altered, and multiple services will be delayed or rescheduled, as reported by.
The disruption is expected to make rail travel considerably more complex during the month. A report carried by India Today indicates that the impact will be widespread across both long-distance and local services.
Why Is Indian Railways Cancelling So Many Trains?
The decision has raised questions among passengers, but former railway officer VK Gupta has explained that such large-scale cancellations are usually linked to essential infrastructure work. He noted that whenever the Railways cancels such a large number of trains, it is generally due to major maintenance or infrastructure development. Such decisions are never taken without strong operational reasons.
Sources confirm that the current mega block is required for maintenance and expansion work linked to the construction of a fourth railway line at Champa station in the Bilaspur Railway Division. This involves non-interlocking work, track laying, and signalling upgrades. During this period, trains on the affected route will either be halted or diverted.
Officials say the long-term aim is to improve train speed and reduce delays, although passengers are likely to face short-term disruption.
States Likely To Be Affected By The Mega Block
The impact of this work will not be limited to a single region. Several states are expected to experience disruptions, including:
- West Bengal
- Maharashtra
- Gujarat
- Madhya Pradesh
- Chhattisgarh
- Jharkhand
- Odisha
Passengers travelling from or through these states should remain particularly cautious while planning journeys.
Breakdown Of Train Disruptions
The overall impact has been detailed as follows:
Total cancellations: 77 trains
- 65 express and superfast trains
- 12 local passenger trains
Route diversions: Around 8 major trains
- Short termination: 6 trains will end their journey before reaching the final destination
- Timing changes: Multiple services will see revised departure and arrival timings, potentially increasing journey durations
Major Trains Affected
Among the 65 express trains affected, several important long-distance services are included:
- Tatanagar-Bilaspur Express
- South Bihar Express
- Ahmedabad-Howrah Express
- Howrah-CSMT (Mumbai) Express
- Hatia-Pune Express
- Puri-Jodhpur Express
- Okha-Shalimar Express
- Kamakhya-LTT (Mumbai) Express
- Gaya-LTT Express
- Udaipur-Shalimar Express
Additionally, several MEMU and local services will also be cancelled, impacting daily commuters, workers, and small traders.
Diversion Of Premium Trains Including Duronto Services
The disruption extends beyond cancellations. Even trains that continue running may not follow their usual routes.
Premium services such as the Howrah-Pune Duronto Express, CSMT-Howrah Duronto Express, and Gyaneshwari Express will now operate via Raipur, Titlagarh, and Jharsuguda instead of the Bilaspur-Champa corridor.
Due to longer alternative routes, passengers should anticipate delays and plan accordingly. Travellers are advised to carry adequate food and water, as usual station stops and onboard access to supplies may differ from regular routes.
Passenger Advisory: What You Should Do
With significant changes expected, passengers are advised to take precautions before travelling.
1. Check Train Status Before Leaving
Always verify your train’s running status before heading to the station using:
- NTES
- IRCTC website
