Former Chelsea centre-back John Terry has said that he is shocked by Enzo Maresca’s sacking by the Premier League side, adding that things have not been at their best within the club, but much more would
have happened behind the scenes which led to the unceremonious exit.
Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge comes with Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal and having managed just one victory in their last seven league games.
Speculation over Maresca’s future intensified during Chelsea’s poor run of results, amidst reports of a deteriorating relationship between the coach and the club’s hierarchy.
“Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea and to be honest, I am completely shocked. I did not see it coming. I know things of late have not been how he would like. You can see and hear that there has been tension,” Terry said while speaking on a TikTok video.
“Just my opinion from afar, there has clearly been tension between the manager and the owner and they have come to this decision. It is a big shock because rewind three or four weeks ago and we were playing so well against Barcelona,” Terry added.
Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane is expected to take charge of Sunday’s trip to Manchester City.
“I think, like the squad, the manager is inexperienced himself. It was his first full-time job in the top-flight and he has said how he is still learning and how he has got some things wrong at times,” Terry said.
“But I will say there are always two sides to the story and there are certainly things behind the scenes that I don’t know about. I just hear rumblings like everyone else does,” Terry added.
Liam Rosenior, the 41-year-old head coach of French club Strasbourg, owned by Chelsea’s parent company BlueCo, the consortium led by US billionaire Todd Boehly, is the frontrunner to replace Maresca, despite his lack of Premier League experience.
