The Noida Police arrested the third accused in the dowry murder case of a 28-year-old woman, Nikki, who was set on fire allegedly by her husband at their residence in Greater Noida, the officials said
on Monday.
Nikki’s brother-in-law is the latest accused to be nabbed in the case today. The police earlier arrested the accused husband, Vipin Bhati, on Saturday, and his mother, Daya Bhati, on Sunday.
The brother-in-law is also an accused for demanding dowry, along with the mother and father of Vipin. While the mother-in-law and brother-in-law of Nikki have been apprehended, the father-in-law is still at large, officials said.
The Noida dowry murder case pertains to the brutal killing of a woman over dowry demands by her husband and his family members in Greater Noida’s Sirsa village. Nikki was set ablaze allegedly by her husband in front of her elder sister, who is also married to the same family, and her minor son on August 21. She died of severe burn injuries while on transit route from a private hospital in Noida to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
Based on her sister, Kanchan’s complaint, Nikki’s husband, Vipin, was arrested on Saturday.
The duo got married in 2016, and barely six months into married life, the husband allegedly started torturing Nikki, her family said.
Vipin and his family’s dowry demands were “increasing day by day”, despite all their demands being met during the wedding, according to the family.
Expensive items such as gold, Scorpio, Bullet bike were given as dowry to Vipin, yet he demanded Rs 36 lakh almost nine years after marriage and allegedly harassed Nikki for the same.
