After weeks of uncertainty due to safety concerns, the much-awaited Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 is set to begin on July 30, offering thousands of devotees another opportunity to undertake one of Himachal
Pradesh’s most sacred and physically demanding pilgrimages. The district administration has approved the resumption of the yatra after reviewing the trekking route and implementing additional safety measures.
Nestled high in the rugged Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district, the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra stands as one of India’s most spiritually significant and physically demanding pilgrimages.
Earlier this year, the pilgrimage was postponed after authorities identified multiple hazards along the route, including active glaciers, unstable boulders, rockfall zones and landslide-prone stretches.
When Does Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 Begin?
This year, the much-anticipated Kinnaur Kailash Yatra will finally commence on July 30, 2026, and continue until August 10, subject to favourable weather conditions. The pilgrimage had earlier been postponed from its original July 1 to July 30 schedule after a safety assessment flagged serious risks along the route, including active glaciers, unstable boulders, falling rocks and landslide-prone stretches.
The pilgrimage will be conducted via the Tangling–Meling Khata–Cave route, which has been inspected and cleared for devotees.
How Many Pilgrims Will Be Allowed Each Day?
To improve crowd management and enhance safety on the high-altitude trail, authorities have fixed a daily cap of 375 pilgrims.
The quota has been divided into three categories:
- 175 pilgrims through online registration
- 125 pilgrims through offline registration
- 75 pilgrims through the Adventure Tour Operators Association, Kinnaur
Officials have stressed that registration is compulsory, and no devotee will be permitted to undertake the pilgrimage without completing the required formalities.
Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026: Registration
Online registration is scheduled to open on July 28, while offline registration will begin on July 30 at the registration camp in Tangling village.
Pilgrims must carry valid identity documents and complete all mandatory procedures before starting the trek.
Medical Fitness Certificate
Since Kinnaur Kailash is regarded as one of India’s most challenging religious treks, every pilgrim must produce a medical fitness certificate issued by a registered medical officer. Those who do not already have one can undergo a medical examination at the designated medical camp in Tangling before beginning the yatra.
The trek climbs to an altitude of around 17,000 feet, making physical fitness and acclimatisation essential. Authorities have advised elderly pilgrims and those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses or other serious medical conditions to consult their doctors before participating.
What Safety Measures Should Pilgrims Follow?
Authorities have urged devotees to follow all official advisories throughout the pilgrimage. Pilgrims should:
- Register only through authorised channels.
- Carry a valid medical fitness certificate.
- Wear sturdy trekking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
- Carry sufficient water, energy-rich food and essential medicines.
- Avoid travelling during heavy rainfall or adverse weather.
- Follow instructions issued by district officials and rescue teams.
- Help keep the pilgrimage route clean by avoiding littering.
The Kinnaur Kailash route is widely regarded as one of the most challenging treks in Himachal Pradesh due to its steep gradients, unpredictable weather and thin air at higher elevations.
