Oracle has laid off an estimated 12,000 employees in India, with another round of job cuts likely within a month, according to people affected by the move.
Globally, the company is estimated to have cut
around 30,000 jobs.
Two affected employees, including one from the human resources team, told Moneycontrol that the layoffs in India have already impacted around 12,000 workers, with further job cuts likely. Oracle employs about 30,000 people in India, including those affected. The company declined to comment on the development.
In an internal email, Oracle informed employees about organisational changes, stating that efforts to streamline operations had led to certain roles becoming redundant. “After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organisational change. As a result, today is your last working day,” the mail said.
“After signing your termination paperwork, you will be eligible to receive a severance package subject to the terms and conditions of the severance plan. You will receive an email from DocuSign to your Oracle email address with details on your severance and termination date,” it stated.
The letter added: “Access to your computer, email, voicemail, and files will be deactivated soon, and you will be unable to log into your computer.”
The email also instructed employees to urgently provide a personal email address to receive separation-related documents and warned that access to company systems would be revoked shortly.
This latest announcement came a week after Meta started laying off hundreds of employees. Previously, Amazon had announced it would eliminate about 16,000 corporate roles. This was after it had cut 14,000 employees.
As Oracle’s letter went viral online, reactions from employees quickly surfaced online. The posts on Reddit and professional platform Blind stated that layoffs were being rolled out in phases across regions.
The company has offered a severance package that includes 15 days’ salary for each completed year of service, along with one month’s unpaid wages up to the termination date, leave encashment, gratuity (where applicable), and one month’s notice pay. Additionally, a two-month salary top-up has been proposed.
However, these benefits are available only to employees who opt for voluntary and amicable separation.
An affected former employee, Merugu Sridhar, said he was laid off in September after raising concerns over long working hours. He added that, based on inputs from colleagues in HR, Indian employees working in the US have also been impacted, partly due to stricter local labour laws.
The layoffs come as Oracle ramps up capital expenditure to build data centre infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads, while continuing to focus on its core database business.
In September, the company reported a 359 percent surge in remaining performance obligations to $455 billion following a deal with OpenAI valued at over $300 billion. Weeks later, Oracle appointed Mike Sicilia and Clay Magouyrk to take on expanded leadership roles alongside CEO Safra Catz.
