Nine Forms of Goddess Durga
- Devi Shailputri: After Goddess Sati’s self-immolation, she was reborn as Goddess Parvati, the daughter of King Himalaya. Since Shail means mountain in Sanskrit, she came to be known as Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain. She represents strength, stability, and devotion.
- Devi Brahmacharini: In this form, Goddess Parvati is worshipped as a great ascetic. After taking birth at the home of Daksha Prajapati, she performed severe penance to attain Lord Shiva. Her unmarried form is revered as Goddess Brahmacharini, symbolising strictness, devotion, and self-control.
- Devi Chandraghanta: After her marriage to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati adorned a crescent moon (Chandra) on her forehead, giving rise to the name Chandraghanta. This form represents bravery and grace and is believed to protect devotees from negative energies.
- Devi Kushmanda: It is believed that after taking the form of Siddhidatri, Goddess Parvati began residing in the core of the Sun to radiate energy into the universe. Gifted with the rare ability to live within the Sun, she is known as Goddess Kushmanda. Her radiant glow is as luminous as the Sun itself.
- Devi Skandamata: When Goddess Parvati became the mother of Lord Skanda (Kartikeya), she was known as Goddess Skandamata. This form signifies maternal love, protection, and nurturing energy.
- Devi Katyayani: To destroy the demon Mahishasura, Goddess Parvati took the form of Goddess Katyayani, one of her most powerful and warrior-like forms. In this form, the goddess represents courage and righteousness.
- Devi Kalaratri: In order to destroy demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, Goddess Parvati shed her golden complexion, revealing her fiercest and most ferocious form, known as Goddess Kalaratri. She symbolises fearlessness, destruction of ignorance and protection from all negative forces.
- Devi Mahagauri: According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Shailputri was extremely beautiful at the age of sixteen and possessed a radiant, fair complexion. Due to this divine glow, she came to be known as Goddess Mahagauri.
- Devi Siddhidatri: At the beginning of creation, Lord Rudra worshipped Adi-Parashakti to bring the universe into existence. The supreme Goddess, initially formless, appeared from the left half of Lord Shiva as Goddess Siddhidatri. She is believed to grant spiritual powers (siddhis) and ultimate wisdom.
