A new wave of nail polishes is sweeping the market, with gel nail polish trends rapidly on the rise. These polishes provide a stunning shine and vibrant colour, ensuring nails look stylish and attractive
for several weeks.
However, health experts are raising alarms about the potential dangers of excessive gel nail polish use. They warn that it can damage nails, cause allergies, and even lead to serious health issues such as cancer.
According to a BBC report, while gel nail polish is easy to apply, it requires UV light to dry, necessitating exposure of hands to this light for a period. Gel nail polish contains several chemicals that are more reactive than those in regular nail polish, the report pointed out. One such chemical, Trimethylbenzoyldiphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), accelerates the hardening process but has been banned by the European Union (EU) due to its potential reproductive health and cancer risks, it said.
Health experts have noted an increase in allergic reactions linked to gel and acrylic nail systems. Common symptoms include itching, redness, swelling, and sometimes even the separation of the nail from the nail bed, particularly if the gel nail polish is not properly cured or if DIY kits are used without appropriate safety measures, they said. Experts have warned that ingredients like TPO, formaldehyde, toluene, and phthalates in gel nail polish are known for their potential carcinogenic properties.
The EU has highlighted that TPO may adversely affect the reproductive system, and other studies suggest prolonged exposure to these chemicals can increase inflammation and oxidative stress, damaging cells.
Although no research has definitively proven that gel nail polish directly causes cancer, the risk remains a concern. Experts suggest that this trend could be particularly problematic for pregnant women, those with fertility issues, and individuals with sensitive skin who may experience allergic reactions.
