Rajya Sabha Uproar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday slammed Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and accused him of making a “threat of violence” against Union Home Minister
Amit Shah during his speech in the Upper House.
While participating in the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, the Rajya Sabha LoP attacked the Centre over the police action against students protesting against NEET paper leak and alleged irregularities in the education system on Jantar Mantar last week, and demanded Shah’s resignation.
Alleging that pellet guns and lathis were used against students, Kharge said that the Home Minister was responsible for the police action.
“Home Minister Amit Shah must give an answer on police brutality. Why is he silent on the crackdown? He must clarify. If not, he must resign,” Kharge said, adding “The Home Minister is hiding behind closed doors. We will drag you out someday,” prompting loud protests from the treasury benches.

The NDA MPs strongly objected to the statement, describing it as a “threat of violence” against the Home Minister and accusing the Congress of lowering the standards of parliamentary debate.
The exchange came after Union Minister Jitendra Singh defended the Bill and accused the previous UPA government of failing to establish a national examination agency despite recommendations dating back to the 1990s.
Singh said the NDA government had completed an “unfinished task” left by the UPA by creating the National Testing Agency (NTA).
“The irony is that the first time the suggestion for setting up a national agency came was way back in 1992. It was a Congress government at the Center. A series of committees were formed, and in the UPA in 2010, again, a very strong suggestion from one of the committees set up by them came to set up a national testing agency. I am sure they will appreciate and be grateful and thank Prime Minister Modi that the unfinished task and unfinished agenda left by UPA are being completed and brought by the NDA,” he said.

Kharge, however, argued that the amended law would not prevent paper leaks unless the government focused on systemic reforms. He alleged that the legislation had been brought only after widespread protests over the NEET paper leak controversy and claimed the Centre acted under public pressure.
Singh introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, for a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, day after the Lok Sabha cleared it.
