Left-handed batter Priyansh Arya opened the innings for Punjab Kings with Prabhsimran Singh in the ongoing IPL 2026 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in New Chandigarh on Saturday (April 11) and scored
18 runs in the first over of the 220-run chase bowled by Harsh Dubey. Arya opened his and PBKS’s account by hitting Dubey for a four on the first ball and ran for two on the second ball. He survived a LBW appeal on the third and ran two again on the fourth ball. He finished the over by hitting six on the fifth ball and four on the sixth. The total of 18 runs by Priyansh off Dubey’s first over helped him break Virender Sehwag’s record of scoring the most runs by a PBKS batter in the first over of an IPL match.
Sehwag scored 16 runs for PBKS in the first over of the IPL 2014 match played against Kolkata Knight Riders in Cuttack on May 11. In the 2025 IPL match played against CSK in Mullanpur on April 7, Arya also scored 16 runs in the first over bowled by Khaleel Ahmed.
The overall record for scoring most runs in the first over of an IPL innings is held by Yashasvi Jaiswal of the Rajasthan Royals. In the 2023 IPL match played between RR and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 11, Jaiswal scored 26 runs in the first over of RR’s innings bowled by Nitish Rana.
In the ongoing 2026 edition of the IPL, KKR’s Finn Allen scored 24 runs from the first over of the match bowled by SRH pacer David Payne on April 2 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
16-ball 50 for Arya
Arya, who represents Delhi in domestic cricket, needed just 16 balls on Saturday to reach the 50-run mark for PBKS in the 220-run chase. The fifty in 16 balls by Priyansh against SRH is the second fastest half-century in the IPL by a Punjab Kings batter.
The record for scoring the fastest 50 in the IPL for PBKS is held by KL Rahul. Rahul needed only 14 balls to reach the 50-run mark for PBKS in the IPL 2018 match against Delhi Capitals in Mohali on April 8, 2018.
The record for scoring the fastest half-century in IPL history is held by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal needed just 13 balls for Rajasthan Royals to reach the 50-run mark against Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2023 match played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 11.
