Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi’s farmhouse in Khandala, named “Sukoon,” has drawn attention after filmmaker Farah Khan shared a tour of their home. The property shows a mix of simple living and quiet luxury,
set amid nature and open spaces. The visit also touched on Javed Akhtar’s past struggles, making the glimpse into their present life even more meaningful.
The couple spoke openly about their journey, from hard days in Mumbai to building a peaceful retreat away from the city. Farah Khan’s tour gave viewers a personal look at how they live, what they value, and the memories attached to their home.
A Calm Home In Nature
Sukoon is surrounded by thick greenery and tall trees that make the place feel private and peaceful. The garden is wide and open, with white marble statues placed at different spots and a small fountain in the centre. The house itself looks like an old-style bungalow with a high wooden roof and a warm, simple design.
Inside, the decor is minimal and classic. The drawing room is filled with items that Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi collected during their travels. Large windows let in plenty of sunlight and connect the indoors with the outdoors. Farah also showed a big wooden dining table, which adds a natural and earthy feel to the house.

Backyard That Holds Memories
The backyard is simple yet special. It has a wooden table and benches made directly from tree trunks, giving it a rustic look. This space is emotionally important to the family, as it was where Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar got married.
The kitchen follows the same natural theme, with a wooden worktop and metal pots and bowls kept neatly in place. Shabana Azmi revealed that they bought the property about 15 years ago after falling in love with a 150-year-old tree on the land.
She shared that she wanted a small weekend home, but Javed Akhtar dreamed of a larger bungalow, which led to many discussions between them. During the tour, Farah also spoke about Javed’s early days in Mumbai, when he struggled and sometimes slept on footpaths without food.
Looking back at his life now, Javed Akhtar said that even today, luxury feels surprising to him at times. The couple, married since December 9, 1984, continue to cherish their quiet life at Sukoon, away from the noise of the city.
