Train travellers could soon have a faster and far more scenic way to journey between Bengaluru, coastal Karnataka and Goa, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing a new Vande Bharat service planned
for the Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Madgaon route.
The proposed service, which will run through the Western Ghats and along the Konkan coast, marks a significant addition to India’s expanding semi-high-speed rail network. The announcement was made during the minister’s recent visit to Bengaluru, where he inaugurated a high-speed train manufacturing facility at BEML.
During an interaction with Akashvani and Doordarshan on India’s Atmanirbhar high-speed bullet train ambitions, Ashwini Vaishnaw also said the first prototype of the indigenous bullet train is expected next year, with production slated for the latter half of 2027, as reported in The Times Of India.
Journey Along Western Ghats And Konkan Coast
The upcoming Vande Bharat service connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru, with an extension to Madgaon in Goa, is being seen as a long-awaited boost for rail connectivity in the region.
The route is particularly notable because it traverses the scenic yet technically demanding Western Ghats, where steep gradients have long posed operational challenges. According to the Railway Minister, those technical hurdles have now been addressed, paving the way for the launch of the service.
As per official indications, the train is expected to be operated under the South Western Railway (SWR) zone. Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat service would begin soon, signalling faster and more comfortable travel for passengers on the busy corridor.
Goa Extension To Link Three Major Destinations
A key highlight of the announcement is the planned extension to Madgaon in Goa, which would bring three major travel hubs, Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Goa, onto a single high-speed rail corridor.
The minister suggested the new service could be integrated with the existing Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express, which currently covers 319 km in around 4.5 hours. Such integration could significantly streamline travel along the coast while improving connectivity between Karnataka and Goa.
For leisure travellers as well as regular commuters, the route promises not only reduced journey times but also one of the most picturesque rail journeys in the country.
Potential Tourism Game-Changer
The proposed corridor is being viewed as a major boost for tourism, linking destinations that attract both domestic and international visitors.
Bengaluru remains a major urban gateway and one of India’s biggest travel hubs, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India. Mangaluru, known as the gateway to coastal Karnataka, offers access to quieter beaches, historic temples and a rich coastal culture, making it increasingly popular with travellers seeking alternatives to crowded tourist circuits.
Madgaon, one of Goa’s key railheads, connects visitors to the state’s famed beaches, heritage quarters and holiday hotspots.
With rail journeys between these destinations currently often time-consuming, the new Vande Bharat could substantially cut travel durations and make multi-destination travel far easier.
Features Of Vande Bharat Trains
The proposed service is expected to offer the modern features associated with Vande Bharat trains, which have become known for speed, comfort and upgraded passenger amenities. These include:
- Automatic plug doors
- KAVACH train collision avoidance system
- Reclining ergonomic seats
- CCTV surveillance
- Onboard Wi-Fi
- Vacuum-based bio-toilets
- Speeds of up to 180 kmph
These features have positioned Vande Bharat trains as a flagship component of India’s modernising railway network.
More Rail Boost For Bengaluru-Mumbai Route
In another major update on the same day, Ashwini Vaishnaw also said a superfast train and a Vande Bharat sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai would be introduced soon.
The sleeper variant is expected to strengthen premium rail travel between the two metros, while complementing the broader push towards faster long-distance train services.
Part Of India’s Expanding High-Speed Rail Push
The announcement comes amid rapid expansion of India’s rail infrastructure, with new-generation trains, indigenous manufacturing and high-speed ambitions gathering pace.
If launched as planned, the Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Bharat could become one of the country’s most scenic premium train routes, combining engineering across the Ghats, coastal travel along Konkan, and quicker access to three of southern and western India’s most sought-after destinations.
