Sophie Turner is stepping into the iconic role of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Amazon Prime Video, and the actress recently shared that preparing for the physically demanding role revealed
a chronic health condition. On The Julia Cunningham Show, Sophie revealed that it took her months of intense training to get into top shape for the series.
The British actress, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, explained that the preparation for Tomb Raider was grueling. “We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February of last year, of training,” she said.
Sophie went on to share the unexpected discovery about her health during the process. “I’ve learned I have a perpetual back problem, but I also realized that it’s much easier to build muscle if you’ve ever worked out before in your life, which I never had, so it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape. That’s what I’ve learned.”
The actress also reflected on her time on Game of Thrones, noting the difference in physical demands. “I also just was the one that got beat up, not the one doing the beating. So it’s quite nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it!”
Alongside Sophie, the Tomb Raider series features an ensemble cast including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein. Phoebe Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner of the show.
