Prime Minister Narendra Modi will turn 76 on Thursday, September 17, with the Centre and the BJP set to mark the occasion through a nationwide public-service campaign.
Since assuming office as prime minister
in 2014, Prime Minister Modi’s birthdays have often been marked by official programmes, public outreach and welfare initiatives. In his earlier years as PM, he also made it a point to meet his mother, Hiraben Modi, on his birthday and seek her blessings. He met her on several birthdays before her death in December 2022.
Here is a look at how PM Modi celebrated his birthdays since 2104:
2014: On his first birthday as PM in 2014, PM Modi met his mother in Gandhinagar before attending official engagements in Gujarat.
2015: In 2015, the PM visited the Shauryanjali military exhibition commemorating the 1965 India-Pakistan war.
2016: In 2016, he again met his mother before travelling to Navsari, where he attended an event to distribute assistance to differently-abled people.
2017: The following year, the BJP leader dedicated the Sardar Sarovar Dam to the nation and participated in programmes linked to the Narmada Mahotsav.
2018: PM Modi spent his birthday in Varanasi, visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and interacting with school students.
2019: In 2019, he attended the Namami Narmada celebrations in Kevadiya and visited several local attractions, including the Statue of Unity complex.
2020: The pandemic changed the nature of his birthday, with the BJP observing it through ‘Sewa Saptah’ and organising blood donation, eye check-up, and welfare programmes.
His birthdays subsequently coincided with several major initiatives.
2021: In 2021, a special vaccination drive saw India administer 2.26 crore Covid-19 doses in a single day.’
2022: PM Modi released eight cheetahs from Namibia into Kuno National Park.
2023 & 2024: In 2023, he launched the PM Vishwakarma scheme, while in 2024 he launched Odisha’s Subhadra Yojana.
2025: His 75th birthday saw the launch of health and nutrition campaigns in Madhya Pradesh.
For his 76th birthday in 2026, the government has announced the month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, running from September 17 to October 17, focused on public participation and the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’. The nationwide campaign will mark PM Modi’s 25-year journey in public service as Chief Minister and Prime Minister and take forward the resolve of ‘Viksit Bharat’ through public participation.
