The long-delayed Jogeshwari Railway Terminuson the Western Railway (WR) is finally moving forward. The first phase of this terminus is all set to open for passenger service in June 2026. Initially, the project
was planned to be completed by December 2024, but it saw a lot of delays owing to contractor changes, land issues, and administrative reasons. The Western Railway administration has now sped up the project and work is progressing quickly.
Where is it located?
Jogeshwari East, near the existing Jogeshwari suburban station on the Western Railway corridor, with connectivity to the JVLR and Metro lines.
The aim
To reduce passenger load at Mumbai CSMT, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, and Borivali by originating/terminating more suburban and long-distance trains in the western suburbs.
What are the facilities planned?
Multiple platforms, stabling lines, modern passenger amenities, parking, and integration with road and metro transport.
Why does it matter?
It is part of Mumbai’s broader plan to create additional rail terminals outside South Mumbai similar to Bandra Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
What is the cost of the project?
Jogeshwari Terminus will become the fourth railway terminus on Mumbai’s Western Railway. The entire project is expected to cost around Rs 76.48 crore.
How it will help
Once Jogeshwari Terminus opens, the crowd at Dadar, Mumbai Central, and Bandra Terminus is expected to reduce significantly.
Around 24 trains can be handled daily. In the first phase, two passenger platforms will be built — one next to the station and another between two tracks.
This will allow three long-distance trains to be handled at the same time. In the second phase, extra platforms, a pit line, and a shunting neck will be constructed.
Project update
Senior officials have said the entire work will be finished by March 2027. Currently, the assistant terminal yard at Jogeshwari is only used for parking trains, but once the terminus is complete, regular long-distance trains will operate from here.
