Veteran filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja died at his residence in Chennai after battling age-related health complications. The news was confirmed by the Tamil Film Producers Council, which paid tribute to the celebrated director in an official statement. “We regret to inform you that the legendary director Mr. Bharathiraja, a former president and one of the senior members of our association, died early this morning.”
Bharathiraja had been dealing with health issues for some time. He was hospitalised in December last year due to respiratory complications and was admitted again earlier this year after his condition worsened. He was discharged from hospital in April.
His death marks the end of an illustrious career that spanned decades and left a lasting impact on Tamil cinema. Bharathiraja was behind some of the industry’s most acclaimed films, including 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Nizhalgal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Tik Tik Tik, Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, Mudhal Mariyathai and Kizhakku Cheemayile.
Throughout his career, he worked with some of Tamil cinema’s biggest names, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sivaji Ganesan. His storytelling and filmmaking style earned him a place among the most influential directors in the industry’s history.
