Mumbai Police have begun cracking down on the unauthorised use of drones during Ganpati arrival celebrations, with the Kalachowki Police taking action against two people found allegedly filming a procession
using drones.
The incident took place during the Mahaganpati arrival procession in Kalachowki, where the two individuals were spotted operating drones to capture aerial footage of the celebrations. Police intervened and seized two drones collectively valued at around Rs 1.87 lakh.
According to the police, action has been initiated under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The action comes as Mumbai prepares for a series of Ganpati-related events and processions. With large crowds expected on city roads, police have tightened security arrangements and are keeping a close watch on activities that could pose a risk to public safety.
The use of drones during crowded religious processions is of particular concern for the authorities. Unauthorised drones can enter restricted airspace, interfere with security arrangements and create potential risks for people gathered below. Police have made it clear that drones cannot be flown in Mumbai without the required permission. Citizens, photographers, social media content creators and others wishing to capture aerial footage of Ganpati celebrations have been advised to follow the prescribed rules and obtain permission from the authorities.
The Kalachowki action is likely to serve as a warning ahead of the Ganesh festival, when thousands of devotees are expected to take part in Ganpati installation ceremonies, public celebrations and processions across Mumbai.
Ganpati arrival processions often draw large crowds, with several prominent mandals organising elaborate celebrations accompanied by music, decorations and public gatherings. Police and civic agencies deploy additional personnel and equipment to manage crowds and ensure smooth movement of traffic during such events.
Against this backdrop, officials are expected to maintain strict surveillance over the use of drones and other equipment that could affect security arrangements.
Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with security personnel and avoid flying drones without permission during Ganpati celebrations. Those found violating the restrictions could face legal action, apart from having their equipment seized.
With the festival season approaching, Mumbai Police are expected to intensify checks at major procession routes and other sensitive locations to ensure that celebrations remain safe and orderly.
