If you are planning to travel across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Haridwar or parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next few days, it’s worth checking the latest traffic advisories before you head
out. Authorities have announced a series of road closures and diversions for the annual Kanwar Yatra, which begins on July 30 and concludes on August 11.
During the pilgrimage, lakhs of Kanwariyas travel to Haridwar to collect holy Ganga water and carry it back to offer at Shiva temples in their hometowns. To ensure the safe movement of pilgrims, traffic restrictions will remain in force on several major highways and city roads until August 12 in many areas.
Ghaziabad Announces Major Traffic Restrictions
The Ghaziabad Police has rolled out a comprehensive traffic management plan to manage the surge in pilgrims.
Heavy vehicles banned: From 8 am on July 29 until August 12, the entry of heavy goods vehicles—including trucks, DCMs, tractor-trolleys and similar vehicles—into Ghaziabad city has been prohibited.
Heavy vehicles arriving from Delhi, Baghpat, Hapur and Bulandshahr will be diverted via:
- Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE)
- NH-09
- Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
Heavy vehicle movement will also remain prohibited on:
- Ganga Canal Track Kanwar Marg
- Pipeline Marg
- National Highway 34 (formerly NH-58)
- Delhi-Meerut Expressway
Restrictions On Cars, Autos And Light Commercial Vehicles
From August 5 to August 12, restrictions will also apply to cars, pickup vehicles, mini-trucks, tempos and other light commercial vehicles.
Vehicles heading towards Dudheshwarnath Temple through the following routes will not be allowed:
- Railway Station Road
- Kirana Mandi
- Ramteeram Road
- Ghantaghar
- Bajariya Road
- Delhi Gate
Meanwhile, auto-rickshaw services will remain suspended on these routes:
- Seemapuri Border to Lal Kuan
- Mohan Nagar to Anand Vihar
Delhi-Haridwar Highway To Remain Closed
Authorities in Muzaffarnagar have also imposed traffic restrictions on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and the Ganga Canal Road.
Heavy vehicles will face restrictions from July 30, while all vehicles will be prohibited from using these routes between August 4 and August 12 to facilitate the smooth movement of Kanwar pilgrims.
A dedicated stretch of the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway will remain reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas during the Yatra.
Delhi-Meerut Expressway To Shut For Five Days
The Uttar Pradesh section of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) will remain closed to vehicular traffic from August 7 to August 12 (Shivratri).
Travellers commuting from Delhi, Noida or Ghaziabad towards Meerut, Haridwar or Muzaffarnagar have been advised to take alternative routes. Recommended alternate routes:
- Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) via Dasna for long-distance travel
- Delhi-Dehradun Expressway for northbound traffic from Delhi
- NH-9 service roads and local lanes towards Hapur and Bulandshahr
- Mohan Nagar, Link Road and Hapur Road for local travel within Ghaziabad
- Mirzapur Also Announces Diversions
The Mirzapur district administration has imposed route diversions and no-entry restrictions from July 31 to August 28.
Heavy vehicles, except those carrying essential supplies such as milk, petroleum products, school materials and emergency goods, will not be allowed to enter the city during the Sawan period.
Diversions have been announced at several locations, including:
- Robertsganj Tiraha
- Madihan
- Bharuhana Chowki
- Gaipura
- Rajgarh Tiraha
- Barkachha
- Belan Baraudha
- Tengra Mod
- Shastri Bridge
Vehicles travelling from Prayagraj, Rewa, Rajgarh and Ghorawal will be redirected through designated alternative routes.
Additional Safety Measures
To ensure the safety of pilgrims, district authorities have deployed additional personnel and emergency arrangements.
Police divers will be stationed at major bathing ghats along the Ganga Canal Road, while a temporary police station has been established at Rampur Tiraha on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway to monitor traffic and assist devotees throughout the Kanwar Yatra.
With traffic restrictions extending across key highways and urban routes, commuters are advised to check the latest advisories, plan extra travel time and use the recommended alternate routes to avoid delays during the Kanwar Yatra period.
