Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave a subtle message to US President Donald Trump as both countries negotiate for a trade deal, saying his government will not allow any harm to come to small entrepreneurs,
farmers, and cattle rearers.
Without naming the US, the Prime Minister pointed towards the politics driven by economic self-interest in the world
“All of you are witnessing the kind of politics driven by economic self-interest that is happening in the world today. From this land of Ahmedabad, I would like to say to my small entrepreneurs, to the shopkeepers, to the farmers and cattle rearers. For Modi, your interest is paramount. My government will not allow any harm to come to small entrepreneurs, to farmers, or to cattle rearers. No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand,” PM Modi said.

Trump hasimposed 50% tariffs on India and an additional unspecified penalty on the sale and purchase of Russian oil. India has dubbed Trump’s tariffs announcement as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs had said India will take all actions necessary to “protect its national interests.
“We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India. It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” it said.
