Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating her on becoming Italy’s longest continuously serving prime minister in the postwar era, saying the relationship
between India and Italy was “stronger than ever”.
“Thank you, dear @narendramodi, for your words and for your friendship,” Meloni said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding, “The relationship between Italy and India is today stronger than ever.”
Meloni said the Special Strategic Partnership between the two countries reflected their intention to combine their expertise and create new opportunities for economic growth.
“The Special Strategic Partnership that we launched during our last meeting is the recognition of the importance of this bond and of the will to unite the expertise of our Nations to create new opportunities for growth,” she said.
She also said the two countries would work together to strengthen ties between Europe and Asia, including through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
“I am certain that Italy and India, together, will continue to strengthen the bond between our Continents as well, working side by side also to develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor,” Meloni said.
Earlier, PM Modi congratulated Meloni, calling her his “friend” and praising her achievement of becoming Italy’s longest continuously serving prime minister in its postwar history.
“Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history,” PM Modi wrote on X. He said the milestone reflected the “trust and confidence” placed in Meloni by the Italian people and credited her friendship with helping strengthen the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.
“Her friendship has also been instrumental in strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership and I look forward to continuing our close cooperation to build a prosperous future for the people of our countries,” PM Modi said. He also wished Meloni “continued success in the years ahead”.
Giorgia Meloni’s Historic Milestone
Meloni has now completed 1,413 uninterrupted days in office, making her government the longest continuously serving government in Italy’s republican history, excluding Benito Mussolini’s dictatorship. The milestone is significant in Italy, which has experienced frequent changes of government since World War II. Italian governments have historically lasted around 14 months on average.
Meloni became prime minister in October 2022 after her Brothers of Italy party emerged as the largest force in the 2022 general election.
