British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday announced that UK authorities had intercepted a suspected “shadow fleet” oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel, describing the operation
as another blow to Russia’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine.
In a statement posted on social media, Starmer said he had directed the UK’s Armed Forces to carry out the operation in the early hours of the morning.
“In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel,” Starmer said.

He added that the operation was successful and formed part of broader efforts to target networks accused of helping Moscow evade international sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.
What Is Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’?
Western governments use the term “shadow fleet” to describe a network of ageing tankers and shipping companies allegedly used by Russia to transport oil while bypassing sanctions and price caps imposed by the United States, the European Union and their allies.
These vessels often operate under opaque ownership structures, change flags frequently and are accused of helping Moscow continue exporting oil despite restrictions.
The UK and its allies have repeatedly targeted such vessels through sanctions, asset freezes and maritime enforcement measures.
Starmer Links Operation to Ukraine War
Starmer said the interception was intended to send a message to those helping Russia sustain its military campaign in Ukraine.
“This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin’s war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide,” he said.
The British leader also thanked members of the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies involved in the operation, praising their efforts to protect national security.
Part of Wider Western Pressure Campaign
The interception comes as Western nations continue efforts to tighten enforcement of sanctions on Russia more than four years after the war in Ukraine escalated.
Officials across Europe have increasingly expressed concern that the shadow fleet allows Russia to generate billions of dollars in oil revenues despite international restrictions.
The UK government has been among the most vocal supporters of stronger action against vessels suspected of participating in sanctions evasion.
Further details about the tanker, its ownership and its final destination were not immediately disclosed by British authorities.
