Five people have been arrested in connection with the assault on Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee.
Among those arrested are Tapan Maity and Akash, who were allegedly seen in videos related to
the incident.
Police have taken five individuals into custody as part of the investigation.
Abhishek Banerjee was assaulted by a mob in Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where he had gone to meet victims of post-election violence.
TMC chief and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party for the attack. The ruling party, however, denied the allegation.
Speaking about the incident, Mamata Banerjee alleged that authorities were attempting to prevent Abhishek Banerjee from receiving medical treatment.
“Those who are in power are threatening all the hospitals and the maximum authorities not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they don’t want him to be treated,” she said, hitting out at the new BJP government in Bengal.
A medical note issued by Belle Vue Clinic said Abhishek Banerjee, 38, underwent a medical examination on May 30, 2026.
The assessment found no major injuries, with doctors noting only a bruise on his chest. The note further stated that he was conscious, alert, oriented and able to communicate normally during the examination.
Doctors determined that hospitalisation was not necessary. As a precaution, he was administered normal saline, Ringer’s lactate and pain-relief medication.
The incident has further escalated the political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the recent change of government in West Bengal.
