Sarfaraz Khan’s admiration for Mohammad Azharuddin came full circle on Friday as the Mumbai batter struck a commanding double century and attributed his success to the former India skipper’s guidance.
Sarfaraz scored a majestic 227 against Azharuddin’s home side, Hyderabad, in the Elite Group D Ranji Trophy match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, anchoring Mumbai’s first-innings total of 560. His knock included 19 fours and nine sixes, at a stunning strike rate of 103.65, against an attack that included India’s first-choice quick, Mohammed Siraj.
Later in the day, Sarfaraz revealed that his meeting with Azhar on the eve of the match proved particularly insightful, especially in dealing with reverse swing.
“I haven’t played much reverse swing in my career. Azhar sir told me the ball reverses early here and explained where to stand for the inswing, even demonstrating shots. We spoke for nearly two hours,” Sarfaraz told reporters.
The Mumbai batter also spoke of his long-standing admiration for Azhar’s batting. “When I was young, my father showed me videos of Azhar sir. Even now, he shows me clips of his flick shots. I’m a big fan of his style,” Sarfaraz added.
Explaining the significance of the innings, Sarfaraz said the pitch demanded intent and adaptability because the ball was keeping low at times, and it needed him to be at his attacking best.
‘Why me?’ Azhar denies credit
Azharuddin downplayed his role in the innings.
“Sarfaraz should get all the credit — why me?” Azhar told Cricbuzz. “He came to my office and had some queries. I told him a few things. It’s my duty, and I explained how it should be done. I congratulate him on the superlative knock.”
While Azhar declined to disclose the specifics of their discussion, he was unequivocal in his support for Sarfaraz’s international prospects. “He has done well and should be selected for the Indian team. He is not getting chances. He is an attacking batter and, unlike many others, he has not had too many opportunities. He has delivered at every level,” Azhar said.
Sarfaraz has featured in six Tests for India, scoring one century, but has not represented the national side since November 2024.
