Sleep divorce has been trending online lately, with reports suggesting that more and more young couples are choosing it. The term simply means couples deciding to sleep in separate rooms instead of sharing
a bed.
According to a 2024 report by the National Post, millennials are increasingly opting for sleep divorce, viewing it as a practice that can actually strengthen their relationships. Supporting this shift, the Hilton 2025 Trends Report revealed that many couples on vacation now prefer separate beds to ensure better rest.
Adding to the conversation, a recent Reddit post went viral after a user shared how sleeping in separate rooms from his wife significantly improved their relationship.
The Viral ‘Sleep Divorce’ Post On Reddit
The Reddit post began with a question, as the user was a bit apprehensive about how many people on Reddit actually sleep in separate beds and whether it is more common than most people think. He then explained that about five years ago, he got up one night because he couldn’t sleep due to his wife. That experience led the couple to realise that they both slept much better apart.
He mentioned that he has some sleeping habits his wife doesn’t like. Explaining the positive changes since they started sleeping in separate rooms, he said that now neither of them disturbs the other when one has to wake up.
He added that he snores, likes to spread out while sleeping, and prefers to sleep with the door closed, while his wife keeps it open because of their cats. Since they now sleep in separate rooms, these issues no longer cause conflict, and both are free to sleep the way they prefer.
He concluded his post with, “We both sleep better, and as a result, are in a better mood and more rested, it’s great.”
Reddit Users Agree
A lot of users agreed on the positive aspects of ‘sleep divorce’. A redditor wrote, “I love the way of phrasing it! Speaking for myself, I snore badly, so my wife and I have been sleeping much better since we’re using separate rooms on most nights.” Another one added, “Same here. Getting better sleep gets really important the older you get. We work together so we spend a LOT of time together, and are just fine with having separate rooms.” “My partner and I have separate but adjoining houses, having our own personal living spaces makes everything much better,” commented an individual.
While the internet seems to agree on the concept of sleep divorce, research showcases something similar. According to the Sleep Research Society, about 30% of a person’s sleep quality is affected by their partner’s sleep habits. So, if your partner’s sleep patterns are disrupting yours, sleeping separately could actually improve your rest.
