Glenn Phillips delivered a sharp response during Gujarat Titans’ post‑match press conference when he was asked whether the team had mentally surrendered while chasing Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s massive
total in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 at Dharamsala on Tuesday.
Despite not being part of Gujarat Titans’ playing XI, Phillips attended the media interaction after the team’s crushing 92‑run defeat to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The New Zealand batter appeared visibly stunned when a reporter suggested Gujarat may have accepted defeat after RCB piled up 254/5.
Glenn Phillips said: “That’s a silly question. That is a really silly question. No one goes in there waiting to go, ‘Oh, you know what? We’re just going to give up on this one.’ Why would we do that as professional cricketers? That’s a terrible question.”

Phillips firmly defended the team’s effort, insisting the players gave everything they had despite the daunting chase.
“We went out there, we gave it everything. Unfortunately, when you’re trying to chase 250, everything has to go right. And we went out there to try and make everything go right, and obviously it didn’t.”
RCB completely dominated the contest, with captain Rajat Patidar smashing an unbeaten 93 off just 33 balls. Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya also scored aggressively as Gujarat’s bowlers struggled under pressure.
In reply, Gujarat Titans collapsed early after losing Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler cheaply. They were eventually bowled out for 162.
Scoreboard Pressure?
Phillips admitted that scoreboard pressure played a huge role in the batting collapse and acknowledged how difficult such chases are in T20 cricket.
“There’s a huge amount of scoreboard pressure when you’re trying to chase 250. And, you know, very few teams have done it. Obviously, Punjab Kings have managed to do it a couple of times, which has been phenomenal. And I think they’ve maybe made it seem easier than it is. I’ve yet to be part of a team that’s gotten anywhere near 250, so, you know, sometimes it just is what it is,” he said.
Phillips also brushed aside suggestions that it was unusual for a non‑playing member to address the media, stressing that the entire squad shares responsibility.
“As Ash [Ashish Nehra] says, ‘chill pill,’ make sure they’re ready for the next one.”
