Shehzad Poonawalla, a long-time spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who had earlier tendered his resignation from all party posts, has once again urged the party to accept his resignation letter,
which was previously rejected. The BJP spokesperson had offered to resign from all party positions and primary membership on July 30.
In a post on X on Monday, Poonawalla said, “With utmost humility, sense of affection & gratitude, I have once again submitted my resignation letter to @BJP4India & Hon’ble Shri @NitinNabin ji & have requested that the same be accepted.”
He shared a copy of his resignation letter dated August 17, addressed to Nitin Nabin.
The letter follows Poonawalla’s previous resignation offer dated July 30, in which he had offered to resign unconditionally from all positions and the primary membership of the BJP.

Poonawalla said the party had refused to immediately accept his earlier resignation and had instead requested him to reconsider his decision. However, after “long and hard contemplation”, he said he had arrived at a final decision to seek relief from his role as national spokesperson and active primary membership of the BJP.
“The events of the last few days, courtesy of certain individuals about whom I have told you in great detail, have forced me to reinforce and stand by my earlier decision,” he wrote in the letter.
Poonawalla expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh.
“Without any sense of hurt and only with the sense of gratefulness, love, affection, and highest regard for Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, Party President Nitin Nabin Ji, senior leaders like Home Minister Amit Shah Ji, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Ji and General Secretary (Organisation) Shri B.L. Santosh Ji, I would, with all humility at my command, once again thank the party for the platform and opportunities given to me in the last five years,” Poonawalla wrote.
Why Did Poonawalla Resign?
He said he would move into the private sector due to pressing financial and personal circumstances but would continue to support the BJP and the Prime Minister’s vision wherever possible.
“As stated earlier, due to pressing emergency financial and personal circumstances, I will move into the private sector, but wherever possible and in whatever format possible, I will continue to support the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP,” he said.
Poonawalla also made it clear that his resignation did not mean he was distancing himself from the BJP’s ideology.
“Like I said, I am only leaving the Vyavastha, not the Vyakti or Vichar,” he wrote.
‘Eternally Grateful’
In his X post, Poonawalla said he remained “eternally grateful” for the guidance, affection, respect and platform provided to him by the BJP and its senior leadership.
“In no other country and no other party would a story like mine, of a young, Pasmanda Muslim, non-dynast, even be possible,” Poonawalla said.
While announcing his departure from the party and his national spokesperson position, Poonawalla said his commitment to the BJP’s stated mission would continue.
“Our Mission, Vision to VB & MIGA: VIKSIT BHARAT & MAKE INDIA GREAT AGAIN will continue with more vigour & passion under the greatest leader India has had: @narendramodi ji,” he wrote.
