A post by an IIT graduate working in the United States has gone viral on the workplace-anonymous forum Blind after he shared an unusual workplace problem. In the post, the user shared that his mother called
his manager to “check in” on him and even set “life KPIs.” In the post titled “My mum called my manager,” the user explained how a “tiny, harmless issue” at work escalated after his mother directly contacted his manager.
“I’m an IIT grad in the US and somehow still not free. Had a tiny, harmless issue at work, and my mom escalated it by calling my manager. Now she calls him regularly to “check in” on me like it’s a standup,” he wrote.
‘Not Work KPIs, Life KPIs’
The situation took an even more unexpected turn when his mother reportedly asked the manager to set KPIs—not for work, but for life. “She’s asking him to set KPIs for me. Not work KPIs, life KPIs. Go to the dentist. Say thank you. Be more grateful in meetings. She’s basically outsourcing Indian parenting to corporate America,” the post said.
‘This Makes You Look Like A Child’
The post struck a chord, drawing a flood of reactions from users who found it hilarious and relatable. Several users shared similar experiences, with one recalling how parents calling managers led to his termination.
“Shows that even OP knows he’s done nothing better in life like learnt a basic skill, which is why his mom would take these insane measures,” read a comment.
Another said, “I cannot imagine providing my manager’s contact info to anyone who isn’t a coworker. How exactly did she get his number? This makes you look like a child.”
“Hilarious! Man, this made my day!! I remember my mother-in-law once wanted to call my manager to get me more leave to attend a marriage. Had to be convinced otherwise by my wife,” stated a user.
An individual shared, “My Indian foreign exchange parents constantly call my manager (also Indian) and plead with him to promote me. They got me fired from Amazon after my manager there (not Indian) insisted they stop calling.”
“It won’t last long. You’ll be getting laid off soon,” wrote a user.
Another remarked, “My father calls the manager and complains about me. I have an Indian manager here. My manager says we should respect elders. What to do?”
‘Cursed Crossover Episode’
The user concluded on a humourous note, saying he wanted to remain a “low-visibility NPC” at work but instead found himself in what he described as a “cursed crossover episode.”
“I just wanted to be a low-visibility NPC and collect a paycheck. Instead, I’m in a cursed crossover episode, and my manager is slowly realizing this is above his pay grade. I am cooked,” the user concluded.
