Omkar Shinde, who was arrested for allegedly stabbing a professor to death at the Malad Railway Station in Mumbai, said he was angered over being “pushed and humiliated in front of women.”
Alok Kumar Singh,
a 32-year-old maths and statistics professor, was stabbed to death after an argument broke out between him and Shinde, 27, a labourer engaged in metal polishing work, on a train at the Malad station. Singh was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivli, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said Shinde, who is “short-tempered by nature”, was unaware that Singh had died at the time of his arrest, NDTV reported. During interrogation, Shinde said he was trying to move forward when Singh pushed him and said, “Can’t you see, there are women standing ahead?”

At this point, the women turned around and looked at them. Shinde said he felt humiliated at this and a verbal spat ensued between the two. In a fit of rage, the suspect brought a sharp knife upon stepping onto the platform and stabbed Singh multiple times in the abdomen.

Singh was a mathematics professor at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics in Vile Parle. Shinde’s arrest was made under section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and he has been remanded to police custody until January 30.

Singh lived with his wife at Pratap Nagar SRA Society in Kurar Village, Malad East, where the couple had been renting a flat for the past three years following their marriage. He was born in the same building and lived there all his life. Singh’s father, Anil Kumar Singh, is part of the security detail of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
