The air in the Himalayas turned electric today as the bells of the fifth Jyotirlinga rang out across the snow-capped peaks. The Kedarnath Opening Date 2026 was officially marked this morning, Wednesday,
April 22, at 8 am. The heavy silver doors of the shrine swung open to devotees from across India.
In a spectacle of devotion, the temple was draped in approximately 51 quintals of fresh flowers, casting a vibrant contrast against the rugged stone architecture. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami joined the throngs of pilgrims to witness the formal commencement of the six-month-long yatra.
Interestingly, the Kedarnath Opening Date 2026 arrived ten days earlier than the previous year. In 2025, the shrine opened its doors on May 2. This early start allows millions of devotees from India and abroad an extended window to seek the blessings of Baba Kedar. While Kedarnath opened today, the doors of Badrinath Dham are set to open tomorrow, April 23, following the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri on April 19.
Kedarnath Yatra: New Rules
Under the new Kedarnath Yatra Rules, mobile phones are strictly banned within the temple complex.
No Reels or Photos: The administration has imposed a total restriction on taking photos, videos, or creating social media reels inside the complex.
Penalties: Authorities have warned that those found violating the ban or carrying mobile phones inside will face punishment. The move aims to preserve the sanctity and solemnity of the shrine.
Kedarnath Registration
If you are planning your journey, Kedarnath Registration remains a mandatory hurdle. The government has streamlined the process to manage the heavy influx of pilgrims expected this year.
- How to Register: Every traveler must register online via the official portal: https://registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in/.
- Verification: You must register your vehicle details and complete verification at each designated shrine point.
- Darshan Tokens: Once registered, ensure you carry your documents to obtain darshan slot tokens, which are essential for a smooth entry into the temple.
How To Reach Kedarnath Temple
The Kedarnath Trek
Gaurikund serves as the base camp for the 16 km trek to the shrine. While the route offers stunning mountain and river views, it is physically demanding with steep inclines. It is best to start at dawn, pace yourself with regular breaks, and utilize the various rest stops and eateries along the trail.
Pony and Palanquin Services
For those unable to trek, Gaurikund offers alternative transport:
- Ponies: A 7–8 hour journey; ideal for a less strenuous ascent.
- Palanquins (Palkis): A 5–6 hour journey; the most comfortable but premium-priced option.
Helicopter Services
The fastest way to reach the temple is via helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi. The flight takes just 10–15 minutes. Due to extreme demand, advance booking is essential, particularly during the peak pilgrimage months.
