Three years after making their relationship Instagram official, Rakul Preet Singh and Jackky Bhagnani tied the knot in February 2024. They had first met through common friends and then became close friends in 2020
during the COVID-19 lockdown. And friendship, according to her, forms the foundation of their marriage.
Speaking exclusively to News18, she says, “It’s very important that you’re best friends with your partner. When you’ve that friendship, everything works out. If there’s friendship, you’ll always be there for that person as you would like to spend time with them. You would want to do everything together. As a result, you’ll never be in a situation where you would want to take some time off.”
“In our case, my friends are his friends and his friends are my friends. We all go on trips together,” Rakul adds. Apart from friendship, their marriage, in her words, is also about equal partnership, where there’s room for individuality as well. “Our marriage is of equals and that’s very important. There’s immense respect for our individual identities. “We’re each other’s cheerleaders and feel happy to see each other grow,” Rakul states.
But is there something that has changed post marriage? “Partner ke liye sleep schedule toh change karna hi padhta hai. There’s no option. Jackky did it for me. He wasn’t really a night person but he used to sleep at around 2:30 am. And I used to sleep at 10 pm. Now, we’ve come to a middle ground and go to bed at eleven o’clock,” she tells us.
In October 2021, Rakul had announced her relationship with Jackky by posting a picture of themselves walking hand-in-hand in a park. Recalling their courtship period, she reveals flying all the way to London to meet him for a date. “I’ve flied across cities for a date and that too to London. It was for a four-hour date. This was in the initial phase of our dating period,” she says.
“I landed at eleven in the morning and my flight back to India was at ten in the night. By the time, I reached the city, it was one o’clock. We only got four hours. It was his birthday and I just wanted to see him. Jackky was in London for a year-and-a-half of our dating phase. I was shooting for Doctor G and we had a three-day break. I had soft launched him on Instagram at that time,” Rakul adds.
On a related note, Jackky’s recent remark on viewing their marriage as a ‘situationship’ went viral on social media and sparked widespread debate online. Recating to it, Rakul said that they both had a ‘great laugh’ over it. She also slammed the tendency to twist conversations, stating that meaningful conversations should not be reduced to clickbait.
Rakul also quipped that they’re millennials, stating, “Gen Z banne ki zarurat nahi hain.” She added, “Funny… until it’s not. Context matters. Nuance matters. Conversations deserve better than being reduced to clickbait. Maybe it’s time platforms take a little more responsibility for the narratives they create (sic).”
