It’s Mahesh Babu’s birthday, so naturally, the internet needed a little gift too! Needless to say, SS Rajamouli knew exactly what to do. The makers of Varanasi have unveiled fresh pictures of Mahesh as Rudhra,
giving us all the first proper peek at his much-talked-about character. Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Africa, Mahesh looks every bit like the larger-than-life hero SS Rajamouli has been quietly cooking up. Varanasi, also starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is among the most anticipated Indian films lined up for 2027.
Mahesh Babu’s First Look As Rudra
Mahesh as Rudra in the first look images is shown as someone who is witty, vulnerable and fierce. These pictures are from Varanasi’s Africa schedule, shot across Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara. In the caption, Rudra is decribed as someone who has a larger purpose in life, carrying a destiny he never asked for.
The stunning African locations are hard to miss in the new pictures. Mahesh Babu’s Rudhra is seen surrounded by the wilderness, with one frame showing him looking out at the vast landscape. Another picture has him chilling on a bamboo raft.

The caption read, “Rudhra was born to fulfil a purpose much larger than himself. He carries a destiny he did not ask for. He is witty, he is vulnerable, and he is fierce. That is what Mahesh brought to him. Anyone can play fierce. Very few can play fierce and fragile in the same breath.”
“These frames are from our Africa schedule, and the land gave us something no set could. Shooting around Kilimanjaro and in the Masai Mara, I was stunned. There were mornings I felt even the 1.43:1 IMAX frame could not hold what was in front of us.”

Varanasi Synopsis Leaked?
While the makers have largely kept details of Varanasi’s story guarded, a reported synopsis has now surfaced online. According to a Gulte report, the story is set in 2027, when an asteroid named Shambhavi is said to be on a collision course with Varanasi, putting the city at risk of a catastrophic impact.
Mahesh Babu reportedly plays Rudhra, an archaeologist and explorer who is brought on board for a mission to find an ancient cosmic artefact. He is joined by Priyanka Chopra’s Mandakini, a historian and skilled marksman, as they embark on the dangerous journey.
The reported synopsis reads, “In the year 2027, the world faces an existential crisis as a massive asteroid named Shambhavi is on a direct collision course with the holy city of Varanasi. A rugged archaeologist and explorer, Rudhra, is recruited for a high-stakes, globetrotting mission to recover an ancient cosmic artifact, joined by Mandakini, a fierce historian and skilled marksman.”
Their search reportedly takes them through Africa, Antarctica and Europe, while Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kumbha emerges as the antagonist.
The synopsis further states, “Their quest becomes a high-tech sci-fi thriller racing across the jungles of Africa, the icy wastes of Antarctica, and the landscapes of Europe, pursued by the tech-genius villain Kumbha. The key to stopping a future catastrophe lies hidden within the city’s mythical past.”
The makers have not officially confirmed the reported synopsis.
Varanasi is set for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
