Shubman Gill is enjoying life as India Test captain. Ever since he took over the mantle from Rohit Sharma in England, the middle-order batter has been peeling off centuries for fun, taking his tally to 10
now with a sparkling 129 not out against West Indies in the ongoing 2nd Test in New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Gill, who made his Test debut in 2020, has now scored 10 centuries in the ICC World Test Championship which is now the most by any Indian batter. He surpassed the previous record held by former India captain Rohit Sharma who struck 9 centuries in WTC.
Overall, Gill is fifth on the list of most centuries by a batter in WTC history. England’s Joe Root is the undisputed leader with 21 centuries from 69 Tests followed by Steve Smith at second who has 13 from 55 Tests.

Most centuries in WTC history
Gill succeeded Rohit into the role of India captain after the latter’s retirement earlier this year. Ever since taking over the responsibility, the young batter has been in red-hot form.
During the five-match Test series in England, Gill scored a record 754 runs from 10 innings at an average of 75.40 including a maiden double-century. He finished the tour with five centuries.
He continued his excellent form at home, scoring a half-century in the first Test against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. And followed that with a century on the second day of the 2nd Test. The 24-year-old has now scored 2826 runs from 71 innings at an average of 43.47. He has 10 centuries and eight half-centuries to his name.
With his latest century, Gill also drew level with Virat Kohli’s record for the most hundreds in a calendar year by an India Test captain. Kohli twice scored five tons in a year as captain (2017, 2018).
