Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of ignoring the problems faced by farmers, saying they created such a mess that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) still has to do much more work
to rectify their missteps.
Addressing a public rally after the inauguration of a urea plant at the Assam Valley Fertiliser & Chemical Company Ltd in Namrup, Modi congratulated the people of Assam after performing the ‘Bhoomi pujan’ of the Ammonia-Urea project, saying, “Today is a big day for Assam and the entire North-East. The dream that Namrup and Dibrugarh had been waiting for a long time is being fulfilled today. A new chapter of industrial progress is about to begin in this whole area.”
He announced that several schemes for the welfare of farmers were in the pipeline, saying that the BJP’s ‘double-engine’ government is very sensitive to their needs. “In the development of Viksit Bharat, farmers will play a crucial role. With their interests in mind, our government is working tirelessly to support them,” he added.

“Among various agricultural welfare initiatives, it is essential to ensure a continuous supply of fertiliser to our farmers. This urea factory will fulfil that need. Approximately Rs 11,000 crore will be invested in this facility, which will produce 12 lakh metric tonnes of fertiliser annually. Once production begins here, the supply chain will become more efficient and logistics costs will be significantly reduced,” he said.
PM Modi Attacks Congress
Training his guns on the previous Congress government, PM Modi said, “Congress worsened the situation to such an extent that even after 11 years of hard work, much still needs to be done. During their tenure, many fertiliser factories were shut down, whereas our government has started several of them.”
Asserting that welfare work for farmers began only after the BJP came to power, PM Modi said Namrup was once a major fertiliser production centre that benefited the entire Northeast and stood as a hope for farmers in difficult times.
“However, the machines became outdated, and the Congress government did not care, leading to the shutdown of several units and suffering for farmers. Congress did not bother to find a solution. Today, our double-engine government is resolving the issues created by them. Across the country, many factories were shut, farmers were lathi-charged during urea distribution.”
He also said the synergy between industry and connectivity in the BJP government is fulfilling the aspirations of Assam’s youth. He also said the Namrup unit will also create thousands of new employment and self-employment opportunities.
