US President Donald Trump has said there is a possibility that the United States could launch another attack on Iran, while also expressing hope for a potential agreement with Tehran.
When asked about the
possibility of attacking Iran again, Trump said, “There’s a possibility I will (attack Iran). There’s also a possibility we’ll have a nice, big, beautiful agreement. But the problem is, will they hold the deal?”
The US President said his primary objective was to ensure Iran could never develop a nuclear weapon, arguing that the earlier US operation involving B-2 bombers would not have guaranteed a permanent solution.
“I’ve got to make it permanent,” he said. “That’s the only reason I’m doing it.”
He also claimed that oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz were higher than before the war began, but did not cite any figures to support the assertion.
Trump stopped short of outlining a definitive next step, leaving open the possibility of renewed military action as well as a negotiated settlement.
“I may have to finish it off, or maybe they’ll make a deal,” Trump said. “But I’m not sure. Either way, we win.”
The US-Israeli war against Iran began in February and triggered a wider conflict across the Middle East. The conflict remains unresolved despite a ceasefire and an agreement to finalise a peace deal.
