India’s miserable run in the T20I series continued on Thursday as England stormed to a commanding nine-wicket win in Bristol, sealing the five-match contest 3-0 with a game to spare and inflicting a third
defeat on Shreyas Iyer’s side in four outings.
There was little sign of a turnaround after India’s crushing 125-run loss in Nottingham just two days earlier. Asked to bat first at the County Ground, the visitors struggled to build momentum and could only post 158/7, with captain Shreyas Iyer standing tall amid the collapse with an unbeaten 80.
England, however, made the chase look effortless, powering to 159/1 in just 13.5 overs as skipper Harry Brook hammered an unbeaten 79 off 35 balls to cap another dominant display.
The defeat extended India’s miserable run in T20Is and saw the defending world champions register a string of unwanted records.
Second Indian captain to lose back-to-back T20I series
Having replaced Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain in June, Iyer has now become only the second Indian skipper to lose two successive bilateral T20I series. India had already slumped to a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland before their disappointing campaign in England.
Before Iyer, only Virat Kohli had endured consecutive T20I series defeats, losing to New Zealand (2-1) and Australia (2-0) in 2019.
First consecutive T20I series defeats in seven years
The defeats against Ireland and England mark India’s first back-to-back T20I series losses since 2019, when they were beaten by New Zealand and Australia.
Third-heaviest T20I defeat by balls remaining
England chased down India’s 159-run target with a staggering 37 balls to spare, making it India’s third-biggest defeat in T20Is in terms of deliveries remaining.
Only Australia’s victories over India in Melbourne — by 52 balls in 2008 and 40 balls in 2025 — rank above Thursday’s defeat.
The result also came immediately after India’s record 125-run loss in Nottingham, where they were bowled out for just 76 while chasing 202, their second-lowest T20I total and biggest defeat by runs while batting second.
First T20I series defeat to England in 12 years
England also ended India’s long dominance in the format. The visitors had not lost a T20I series to England since 2014, when they were beaten in a one-off T20I on English soil.
First bilateral series defeat to England across formats since 2018
The loss also ended India’s impressive run against England across all formats in England. It is their first bilateral series defeat there since 2018, ending an unbeaten stretch that included three T20I series, three ODI series and two Test series.
