Why Is 2026 the 77th Republic Day?
India officially became a republic on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act, 1935, and establishing India as a sovereign democratic republic. That day itself was observed as India’s first Republic Day — meaning the count began in 1950, not the following year.
Each subsequent January 26 adds one to the count:
- January 26, 1951 was the second Republic Day
- January 26, 1952 the third
- January 26, 2025 marked the 76th
- January 26, 2026 is the 77th Republic Day
